✂️ What is PDF Tailor?

🤔 Why I build it?

You might be wondering: why build a tool that does something so simple? Honestly, I asked myself the same question—until I started my Permanent Residency (PR) application in Canada.

If you’ve ever gone through an immigration process, you know how overwhelming it can get. For my PR application, IRCC asked for everything: every page of my passport, all my past study permits, and even a detailed record of my travel history over the last 10 years.

But gathering all these documents wasn’t the hardest part.

The real headache? IRCC only accepts a single PDF file.

That meant I had to extract specific pages from one PDF, combine them with pages from other documents, and somehow stitch everything together into one neat file. You’d think that would be easy in 2025, right?

I opened Adobe Acrobat Reader, thinking it would help. But to my surprise, it was packed with every feature except the basic “split and merge” functions I needed. I tried a few other PDF editors—same story. Lots of bells and whistles, but none that made this simple task seamless.

So I Googled around and found plenty of online tools. They worked, but I couldn’t shake the discomfort. I was uploading sensitive documents—my passport, permits, and personal data—to random servers. Who knows where those files end up?

That wasn’t a risk I was willing to take.

At the time, I hacked together a quick Python script to split and merge the PDFs. It did the job… but it wasn’t fun. Every time I needed to make a change, I had to manually enter file names or tweak the code. Not ideal.

Talking to friends who were also applying for PR, I realized I wasn’t alone. Everyone was going through the same frustrating experience. That’s when I decided to build something better: a simple interface that lets you split and merge PDFs with just a few clicks—and without ever uploading your files to the cloud.

The best part? Everything happens locally on your device. No servers. No data leaks. Just your files, your computer, and your peace of mind.

After launching the first version of PDF Tailor, I started getting messages from people going through the same struggles—especially those applying for PR or dealing with government paperwork. They told me how much the tool helped them, and honestly, that meant a lot.

That positive feedback gave me the push I needed to take it a step further.

So, I built a mobile version of PDF Tailor.
